Imagine and Create

This text isn't written by me, just for share...

On this page is a collection of strategies a person can use to increase ones own creativity.

Know clearly what you want

To accomplish a goal that requires creativity, know what you want to do. The more precisely you know what your goal is, the more you can bring your attention to work effectively on that goal.

Don't give up

Don't give up. Mark Twain said, "If at first you don't succeed, give up. Don't be a damned fool about it." Well, sometimes you have to keep working on something even though it seems the effort may be more than what is justified. It's a price you sometimes have to pay.

Be bold

Be willing to try solutions that require unknown methods to implement. The more you can plan and foresee the path to a goal the better, but starting down the path may be the only way to see what possibilites there are to choose from.

Choose worthwhile goals

There is great satisfaction in dedicating oneself to a worthwhile goal. The satisfaction is greater if the value of the goal is great and the goal seems difficult to achieve. To maximize the rewards that your efforts bring, choose goals that contribute to your most cherished values. Even a difficult goal can be a good choice because of the potential reward. And if you fail, you can still feel good about having tried to achieve a worthwhile goal.

Learn by doing

Often the best way to develop your abilities is in pursuing your choosen goals. Your interest is peaked. You are practicing the task most specific to your areas of interest.

Cop an attitude

You control your quality of life with what you think. If you think about how great your life is, then your life is great. If you spend a lot of effort thinking how overwhelming your problems are, then your problems are overwhelming.

Begin living the way you want to by recognizing and acting upon your values and desires. You will put more time and effort into creating what is most important to you. You will be happier and more creative.

Yeah, okay, sometimes for practical reasons it is more important to enjoy what you do than to do what you enjoy. But try to get the most from both of these opposing philosophies.

Look at the grand view from the high road

If you view your life as contributing to the lives of future generations, then you are not limited to only working for your own successes. You can be gratified by your efforts to improve the lives of your children and any others influenced by your deeds. That increased gratification gives you increased energy with increased ability to succeed.

Enjoy the possiblity of success

Everyone gets pleasure when creating something as a hobby. You are not much distracted by the consequences of failure. You know your efforts are primarily for enjoyment.

Try to have much the same attitude in all creative endeavors. So you will not be distracted and disheartened, spend as little time as possible worrying about failure. Make your enjoyment of the experience a high priority. Look forward often to the pleasure you will get from succeeding. You concentration will be helped by knowing that success will bring pleasure.

As much as possible, let yourself be emotionally involved and focused on your work. The more you are engrossed in the process of creation, the more satisfaction and excitement you can have.

Don't try to do too much

Don't set so many goals that you are overwhelmed. Limit the number of projects you start so that you have time for the ones you do start. Give each project the time and attention that it requires. Too many goals at once cuts down on your ability to achieve the important ones.

It's okay to abandon projects as your goals change, but the more determined you are to achieve a goal, the more likely it is you will succeed. A prolonged effort will give you more opportunities to find methods and develop abilities that will enable you to succeed.

Choose to be happy

Everyone can choose to place importance on the positive aspects of their situation. They can choose to be depressed about what they find displeasing. To a large extent you can control your own happiness by choosing to be happy.

To solve a problem, understand the problem

Solving an unfamiliar problem can often be accomplished by thinking about the problem in as many ways as possible until the answer becomes obvious. Each new approach tends to give you a better understanding of the problem and what is needed to solve it. Any new approach could provide part of the solution. Even ideas that are ridiculous might provide some insight. Eventually, you will be able to combine what various approaches has taught you to produce a solution.

Go for your ideals

Keep joy and exuberance by finding inspiration in your most noble values. Use those values to decide on what goals to set. Then remind yourself often why you do what you do. It will boost your motivation and satisfaction.

Desparation can be inspiration

When the goal you are working toward seems unobtainable and you are tempted to give up, realize that the desparation of the situation may be the motivation you need to think of what is needed for you to succeed.

Puzzles aid creativity

I suppose there is no better way of developing your talents and abilities than being earnestly intent upon accompishing a creative project. But when you need a change and want to do something entertaining that develops creativity, try solving a logic puzzle. Generally a puzzle presents a challenge that you must solve by applying unfamiliar concepts. Experience using unfamiliar concepts, makes it more likely you will employ new and unfamiliar concepts to situations that require creativiy.

Imagining success helps you succeed

Reaching a difficult goal may be easier by imagining that you have obtained the goal. Such an exercise will give you motivation because it effectively demonstrates the rewards of reaching your goal. It gives you insights on how to pursue the goal most effectively because you get a more complete awareness of the situation you are trying to bring about. The more completely you envision the goal as having been obtained, the greater this exercise will help you.

Prepare to focus by freeing up your mind

To find the solution to a problem that requires creative thinking, it may help to first relax and abandon temporarily notions of how to deal with the problem. Allow all negative thoughts and emotions to fade away. You may then be ready to develop modified or new approaches to the problem. You are freed from the notions that did not produce a solution and you are freed from pessimism that may have stopped you from performing up to your potential.

Then focus on the problem with as much alertness as possible.

Commit to the task at hand

Allow emotional conflicts to stop. There could be conflicts such as whether you should be pursuing some other interest; employing some other theme; or taking time for rest, learning or finding inspiration. Think about those things before you begin a project. When you begin the project, stop those considerations. Bring your full attention to the task at hand. You will be more alert and open to ideas that might contribute to your goal.

Take nothing for granted

Our understanding is less than perfect. Because of that, nothing is really as it appears to be. Keeping this in mind encourages us to continually search for alternate ideas. A sense that everything is at least a little different than it appears to be, and that there is much we do not understand, instills inquiry as a as a natural mode of operation. The more we feel that present knowledge and understanding is lacking, the more creative we become.

When stuck, try a new way

When logical thinking fails to produce the wanted result, rest the mind by stopping your thoughts as much as possible for a few minutes. A combination of resting the mind and starting a new approach to the problem will sometimes produce the desired result.

Have a lot of ideas, pick out the good ones

One method of generating creative ideas is to think of as many possibilities as you can without limiting the ideas to only likely or logical ideas. The intention is to get ideas to come to your awareness. Use reason to check whether any of them are worthwhile. Also try to be aware of anything about each idea that might suggest a worthwhile idea. The intention is to keep ideas flowing and eventually useable ideas will present themselves. Who knows, perhaps this is basically what goes on constantly as our normal thought process.

Be objective to conquer anxiety

Emotional well being can sometimes be improved by deciding to be unemotional about a disturbing situation. That allows you to see the situation more rationally. You might then recognize absurdities that can be humorous and lightening. Then with an improved mood you are more unable to resolve the situation so that it doesn't hamper your creativity.

Resolve paradoxes

Allow yourself to consider paradoxes. Recognizing that there are two opposing ideas, both of which seem to be true, can lead you to find what the real truth is. It could be that one of the attitudes is false or that they are both false.

The more you are prone to examing paradoxes, the more likely it is you will seek and find more broadly legitimate perspectives and solutions. You will then not be limited by false assumptions. You will be empowered by new ideas.

To avoid turmoil, do what's best for everyone

Conduct yourself as if always striving to deserve the respect of others - as if always trying to do what is in the long run, best for everyone. Your beliefs and values may be at odds with those of other people affected by your conduct. Look for mutually benefical arrangements and least disruptive compromises in each situation. In doing so, turmoil and ill feelings are avoided that would dampen your ability to function to your potential.

Written brainstorming - developing a plan to achieve a goal

Write down your objective in one or two sentences. Write down individual steps that can be used to achieve your goal. For each step write down a way to accomplish that particular step. If no method seems likely, write down any plausible way that presents itself, no matter how impractical. Later you can read over these ideas and something in them very well could suggest workable approaches to the problem.

Attitude is paramount

Keep a good attitude to promote creativity. Take time to renew your enthusiasm and attitude. That could be trips to art museums, reading that book you have been intrigued by, or working on that project that you have wanted to do but which got set aside because of more pressing concerns.

Keep a positive attitude. Your successes should have more emotional importance than your failures.

Appreciate your strengths and abilities. Make repeated efforts to increase each of your abilities.

Be open to suggestions from clients, colleagues, experts or anyone with some advice to offer. Request advice if it is not offered.

Keep developing your abilities

Continually try things that interest you. Feel like painting? Give it a try in whatever ways that appeal to you. Take a class or just go buy a set of paints and brushes to try one or a few paintings. If you loose interest, try something else. You can always come back to painting whenever the urge hits you again. But keep trying something.

You increase your abilities and interests a little here, a little there. If you settle into one or just a few areas of interest, that's good too. Just keep developing in those areas.

You can choose to make your life better

Each of us chooses how we evaluate our lives. We choose how much satisfaction our successes merit. We choose priorities. We choose what goals to work toward. There are compications that interfer with these choices, such as responsibilities to family, illnesses, and the necessity of earning a living. But still, we can choose to continually make changes which shape our lives to become more what we want them to be.

Decide what you want your life to be. Write down the factors that would make up your idea of a good life for you. Be careful to use your own values and not what others think is important. Then write down what you can do this week to begin changing your life. The changes you write down should be no larger than what can actually be accomplished. Read your list every morning until the goals have been achieved. Then make a new list with new goals that will bring your life closer to your ideals. Keep repeating the process. You never will reach an ideal life. But you can make it better and better.

Be sure to often feel the satisfaction of what is good about your life and your achievements.

Ways to get new ideas

Write down ideas as you get them so they can be used later. Later you may be able to combine elements of two or more of these saved ideas.

Look at the work of other artists. If possible spend time with other creative people in your areas of interests. Their attitudes and ideas may be helpful.

If progress on a project stops, try something else for a while. It may be helpful to do something that you are good at or that you particularly enjoy. The rest from the stuck project and a positive attitude may get ideas flowing again.

You don't need to be perfect, just good enough

When you need to be creative, be less concerned with producing something that is perfect or near perfect. Allow yourself to explore ideas as they come and recognize what is good about the mediocre ideas. Then adapt and piece together the good concepts to produce what you are seeking.
